04/10/2008 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Mike Fontenot and Geovany Soto both hit two- run home runs and Jon Lieber provided 4 1/3 innings of scoreless long relief, as the Chicago Cubs finished a sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 7-3 victory at PNC Park.
Lieber (2-1) scattered five hits with one strikeout while accomplishing something starting pitcher Rich Hill couldn't -- he threw strikes. Lieber threw 41 of his 58 pitches for strikes, while Hill only found the plate on 34 of his 72 pitches.
Derrek Lee drove in a pair of runs and Alfonso Soriano finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Chicago broke out the brooms in a crazy, marathon series that lasted 36 total frames. The Cubs won in 15 innings on Wednesday after a 12- frame victory on Monday night.
Matt Morris (0-1) was sailing along until the sixth frame. The veteran right- hander was tagged for seven runs -- four earned -- on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Nate McLouth and Ronny Paulino each collected two hits for the Pirates, who have lost five of their last six.
Soriano manufactured a run all by himself in the top of the first. He singled, stole second and advanced a base on two straight groundouts, the last off the bat of Lee for an RBI.
The Pirates attacked Hill in the home half of the first. McLouth doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and quickly squared the contest on Freddy Sanchez's base hit. Jason Bay and Adam LaRoche both walked to load the bases, and Xavier Nady's sacrifice fly put Pittsburgh in front.
Paulino's single re-loaded the bases and Jose Bautista's sacrifice fly made the score 3-1.
Chicago chipped away in the fifth and exploded in the sixth. Soriano doubled, moved to third on Fontenot's single and came home on Lee's sacrifice fly in the fifth.
The Cubs put a crooked number on the board in the top of the sixth frame to take the lead. Kosuke Fukodome walked and Soto belted a two-run shot over the wall in the center. Ryan Theriot followed with a base hit and Lieber moved him over to second with a bunt. Theriot advanced to third on an error before Reed Johnson's run-scoring single.
Fontenot hit Chicago's second two-run home run of the inning with two outs for a 7-3 lead.

Work left to do: Villanova, Syracuse, DePaul, West Virginia, Providence
Notre Dame and Louisville appear to have done enough to make the move, so we'll make them locks. The Cardinals, despite a modest RPI, are trending way up and have clinched at least a tie for third in the Big East, which should be more than enough with their pair of big road wins. Villanova got back to .500 and gets back to more solid footing. Syracuse got a very important road win and crippled a fellow contender in the process. West Virginia's fate could be in its hands Tuesday at Pitt.
Work left to do:
Villanova [18-9 (7-7), RPI: 21, SOS: 5] Pounded Rutgers to get back to .500. If Cats can get their last two (at UConn, vs. Syracuse), that should be enough with strong computer numbers and a host of wins away from The Pavilion. The Cats have beaten Texas and swept the Big 5 (never easy in Philly), but have a couple of losses to bubble teams (Xavier, Drexel), too. I still think they'll be OK, possibly even at 8-8.
Syracuse [20-8 (9-5), RPI: 53, SOS: 62] History says 10 wins will be plenty, but it might be hard for the Orange to get that last one with a final two vs. G'town, which is trying to win the league title, and at Villanova, which will be desperate for a W. The relative lack of nonconference heft and the weak computer numbers are still concerns, but the Orange have won four in a row and got a very, very big win at Providence on Saturday.
DePaul [16-12 (8-7), RPI: 54, SOS: 18] Beat Cincy and should get past South Florida to get to 9-7, but then what? They have beaten Kansas and Cal (right after the DeVon Hardin injury) earlier this season, but also have lost to Bradley and Purdue, among others. They'll likely need a couple of BE tourney wins, too, but we'll see ...
West Virginia [19-7 (8-6), RPI: 58, SOS: 125] The game at Pitt on Tuesday night could decide the Mountaineers' fate (barring a deep tournament run). They can still get to 9-7 in the Big East without it by beating Cincinnati, but the nine wins would be against UConn, Villanova, St. John's, South Florida, DePaul, Rutgers, Seton Hall twice and the Bearcats. Beating bubble foes is fine, but where's the beef? Outside of beating PG-less UCLA in nonconference play (still a top quality win), there's not a lot to fall back on (besides maybe NC State). WVU vs. Syracuse would be an interesting debate, as the teams don't play in the Big East regular season. WVU has the best win, but Cuse has played the much better schedule.
Providence [17-10 (7-7), RPI: 70, SOS: 33] The Friars likely saw their at-large hopes die at home in the four-point loss to Syracuse, barring an unexpected run to the Big East semis or more. The RPI, bad already, won't be helped by playing St. John's and South Florida in the final two league games.

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.
Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.
Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds
With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.
That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.
Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.
After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.
The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
